What to expect in a therapy session

Our first point of contact will be either by telephone or email, whichever suits you best. I am always ready to explain in more detail or answer any more questions that you may feel you need. You will find contact details are given at the bottom of these pages.

After making contact with me I will ask you for a few details about yourself. Why you want to make changes in your life, and how you think I can help and support you to do this.
Your first session will probably take about an hour and a half. We will begin to find out and explore how things are for you currently, and what you would like to achieve now and in the future. All this will give me valuable insight into how best I can help and support you. Together we can plan the way forward in a way that is right for you.
Later sessions will probably take slightly less, usually about an hour. Occasionally, there may be times when we might employ other relaxation or problem solving techniques, with you just relaxing with your eyes closed. This approach would depend on the type of issue in question. Throughout each session, we will work at a comfortable, thorough and productive pace for you.


In my experience I have found that giving out CD support for use in between sessions where appropriate, really does seem to move the process of change along in a much more assured and positive way. The recording works on several levels; Helping you to relax more easily which in turn helps me to use your session time more effectively. Giving you extra daily support in your ‘mini’ session that you can enjoy at home at a time that is right for you. In some cases too, contributing in reducing the number of sessions that you may potentially need.

Honest communication between us both will help to decide when the appropriate time has come for us to finalise our sessions together. So you go out into the world stronger, more positive and empowered, happy and content. With a firm understanding and knowledge of how you can help yourself live the life you want to live from now on.

There are many techniques that may be used, the ones chosen will be tailored to your individual needs from the information you have given earlier.These may involve recalling memories, describing your thoughts and feelings, imagining the future -the way you want it to be. This is a pleasant, relaxing experience.

Sometimes it may be beneficial to practice relaxation at home, or to keep a log or diary between sessions. You will be advised if this will assist with your specific goals.

Sessions generally take place weekly, however this depends on the individual. Simpler problems such as habits or phobias may only require one or two sessions, whereas more complex problems/goals may take several or more sessions. Whatever your goal is, the aim is to obtain results in the least number of sessions. I treat everyone I work with as an individual, so the work we do will be specifically tailored to your needs.
